Here is a little something about malas. As with many cultures, 3 is a special number as is the number 9. A full mala, 108 beads clearly shows the magic. It can be added 1+0+8=9, there are 4 sections of 27 beads. 2+7=9. Contained within the mala, the first marker is 27 beads, as before, added equals 9. Second marker contains 54 beads. 5+4= 9. Reach the 3rd marker and 81 beads have been counted, 8 +1=9. Count to the guru bead and you then have all 108. A hand mala has 27 beads. 2+7=9, 3 sections of 9 beads. It is a smaller version of the magic numbers.

Featured mala, hand mala, Peach marble, 502

I use malas during the recitation of mantras and I find it just as meditative and relaxing to make them. Each mala I make is thoughtfully designed and constructed from semi-precious stones, metals, wood, and bone. My philosophy is to create something beautiful as well as functional. Never mass produced, rarely the same combination of stones and metal are the same. Often, the natural stones have lovely patterns that add to the pleasure of recitation. Whether you are a practicing Buddist or collector of fine malas, my malas are a joy to behold and use.

This mala is American made. It is constructed in a mindful, meditative manner with the traditional 27 beads, guru bead, and 2 marker beads. The beads are 10 mm peach marble. To my knowledge, this is a natural stone, not dyed. Some people prefer larger beads because they are easier to handle when one has arthritis. The marker beads and the focal bead are 12mm fossil. They are accented by base metal spacer beads. The beads are strung on hand knotted cotton and should resist breakage. If it should break within 6 months of purchase, the mala may be returned to me for re-stringing at no charge, buyer pays shipping. This particular mala has a tassel made from imitation silk.
