If I was to pick one book that explains Buddhism in a simple, straight foward way that was easy to understand, this one is it. As always, Thay's books are brilliant.

This mala is American made. It is constructed in a mindful, meditative manner with the traditional 27 beads, guru bead, and 2 marker beads. The beads are 8mm blue opalite which is not a natural stone but glass. They have an iridescence that is difficult to capture by camera. There is a sort of glowing, blue opaque quality. Very interesting to look at. The marker beads are cherry quartz. This is not a natural stone. It is glass which has been dyed to resemble quartz. These are accented with base metal (lead free) spacers. The guru bead is also moonstone. The focal bead on this piece is a piece of fancy glass. The tassel is imitation silk. The beads are strung on hand knotted cotton and should resist breakage. If it should break within 6 months of purchase, the mala may be returned to me for re-stringing at no charge, buyer pays shipping.

Of course, one does not need to recite mantras to appreciate the beauty of this piece and it would be a fine addition to any collection. Hand malas are generally too large to use as a bracelet. Traditionally, they are held during prostrations. I like to use mine as an un-obtrusive mala while doing walking meditation. Some like to hold their hand mala while going to sleep as the beads make a peaceful focus as one drifts off.
